Frequently asked questions
I'm in a load of Product Slack Communities, how is the community in the Product Mentorship different?
Don't worry, I am in all those slack communities too.
The Product Mentorship is different for a few reasons:
1) Includes Coaching and Training
For starters the mentorship includes all current and future Product Pathways courses.
The goal with the courses and Product Mentorship is to cover common challenges and skills that product people need - for example if you're having issues with stakeholder management, then jump on the stakeholder management courses! The community is there to then back this up through coaching and support. So if you have any questions about the course or want feedback about putting any of the learnings into practice, the community is there to support you!
2) Designed to be small
3) It's not a Slack Group

2) Designed to be small
The problem with open communities is they often grow into the thousands and without strong moderation and controls they often become more noise than help.
This leads to disengagement, but even if that wasn't the case, I'm in some slack communities which have crossed the 100k mark (which is crazy!), but imagine 100,000 engaged people replying and messaging every single day - you just wouldn't be able to keep up!

The Product Mentorship is designed to be small (hence the price point and 12 months timeframe). This keeps conversations meaningful and it allows ME to spend more time with YOU.
3) It's not a Slack Group
I know this sounds like a weird thing to say but, it's not a slack group.
This was a deliberate choice. The Product Mentorship is more than chatting online. It needed to include actual coaching, live events and more. To deliver on that promise it couldn't have been on slack.

Can I expense the Product Mentorship?
Yes, of course you can! In fact, 60% of Product Pathways students expense their course to their company.

Why is there no monthly Mentorship?
Improving your craft is not an overnight transformation.
Therefore having short-term options like only 1 month access just didn't make sense. I would be doing you an injustice.
Of course, I get that this increases the cost but I tried to offset that with 12 months of access, rather than 6 months.
If price is an issue, email us at learn@productpathways.com and we would be happy to discuss payment plan options.

Why only 12 months access?
The 12 month window is there for a few reasons:
For starters, whilst there's value in ongoing mentorship there will be times where you need it more than others. It also didn't make sense to offer a monthly subscription.
Mentoring and building skills takes time. I would be doing you an injustice by offering a mentorship as short as 1 month - I also think we're getting a bit sick of everything being a subscription, right!?
The last reason is because many communities suffer from a large portion of inactive members. I'm sure you're in some groups that you rarely look at (or are more noise than help!). By putting a time window on access I can better guarantee that those in the private mentoring community are active members and are at a point in their career where they're getting the most out of the Product Mentorship.
This is also the case with a lot of the people I do 1-on-1 coaching with. Typically I'll coach them across a 9-18 months timeframe. It's not uncommon to then go a year or two before re-engaging.
Plus many of my 1-on-1 coaching customers and 60% of Product Pathways customers use their training budget or expense it to their company.
Based on all this data, 12 months seemed to be a good time window. Not short, whilst not being too long and it fits within most career planning and budget cycles.

How much time commitment does the Product Mentorship involve?
I know that time is precious, which is why the courses are self-paced so you can work on them in your own time, at your own pace.
The private community is also primarily asynchronous for this reason too. You can jump in ask questions and learn whenever it suits you.
The bottom line is that there is no set hours, no minimum requirement. The Product Mentorship is designed to be a resource, not a task. It's there when you need it.
If you only get help from the private community once - I'm confident that alone will be worth the fee!

I have purchased a Product Pathways Course and would like to join the Product Mentorship, can I get a discount?
Of course! If this is you, I'd be to give help. Reach out at learn@productpathways.com.
Does the Product Mentorship include Resume/CV reviews and Interview prep?
Short answer, yes.
Within the private community there is a section for all things "getting a job" which includes resume reviews, tips for interviewing and examples real product challenges.
The Accelerate Mentorship includes 1-on-1 coaching sessions which you can use for interview practice. You can also add 1-on-1 coaching for an additional fee with the Standard Product Mentorship.

I can't afford the Product Mentorship, are there other ways to pay?
Of course we have payment plans and other options available.
If you're currently full-time employed I would first see if your company could pay. See our guide on expensing here (we have an email template that you can use also).
We also offer Purchasing Power Parity, depending on where you live (see below or email us at learn@productpathways.com with your country of residence for more information).

Do you offer Purchasing power parity?
Yes. If you're based in a country with lower income compared to the US and parts of Western Europe, email me at learn@productpathways.com with your country of residence for options.
FYI Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a form of price-localisation where prices are adjusted based on the purchasing power of your customers in the country. The simplest way I can explain this (and it's also the reason why I offer it) is that the average Product Manager salary is over $160,000 per year whilst the average Product Manager salary in Indonesia is $37,000 (based on the last data I saw).
Where you live should never be a barrier to getting mentorship!
